Is there anything worse than a cold shower in the morning? You haul yourself out of bed, mope over the shower, turn the water on and, bam, you are hit with ice cold water that will not heat up no matter how long you keep it running. Of course, if you are the fifth consecutive person to take a shower in the last 20 minutes, there is a good reason for this lack of warm water: your water heater has not had a chance to respond and make hot enough hot water for you. On the other hand, if you are the first one to shower and you are having this problem, there is a good chance that something may be wrong with your water system.

Before you freak out and call a plumber to come out to your home on an emergency call, you are going to want to check some basic things first. The first thing that you need to check is your water heater. If you find that only a small amount of hot water is being produced before it runs out, you may have an issue with the flow of hot water, which may be fixed on its own. On the other hand, if you find that absolutely no hot water is coming out, you are going to want to make sure that the water heater is on and that there isn’t a fuse out. If you can’t find any rhyme or reason to why your water is getting warm, that’s when you want to call a repair person.
The thing is, your water heater may not be the culprate of the lack of hot water you are getting, it may have something to do with the shower control that you have. The control helps regulate the amount of hot water and cold water that comes out. If you find that the hot water that you have only lasts a little bit of time, or you have it only intermittently, your control may be on the fritz. On the other hand, if no hot water comes out at all and the water heater looks fine, you are probably looking at a broken control. For either of these issues, unless you are an expert in piping, you need to call out a professional plumber who can take a look at the shower control valve and change it if need be. You will see almost an immediate change in the flow of your hot water.
