Hydro Jetting 101
Blockages in sewer lines and pipes can be very damaging and quite costly to repair. Preventing damage ahead of time by performing regular maintenance is the best way to extend the life of a sewer system. One method frequently used by plumbing contractors is called hydro jetting.
What is Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting is a cleaning method used by professional plumbers to remove clogs and debris from sewer tanks and lines. During a hydro-jet cleaning, water blasters send out a forceful burst of water into the lines to cut through any blockages and remove build up from pipes.
Most hydro jetting systems use 4,000 psi. Some tougher jobs may require anywhere from 7,000 psi up to 60,000 psi. A video inspection is done prior to a hydro-jet cleaning to locate areas of concern and to prevent back-ups from flowing into other parts of the sewer system.
What are the Benefits of Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting offers many benefits for both commercial and residential plumbing. Chemical cleaners are harsh on pipes and can damage and weaken them over time. Hydro jetting uses no harsh chemicals so it is safe for not only the sewer system, but also the environment. Hydro jetting uses so much force that it can remove virtually any clog or debris and can reach where other commonly used tools, such as a drain snake, can’t.
The high pressure of the water used during a hydro-jet cleaning helps reduce the possibility of future clogs because it cleans the pipes so well that it’s difficult for debris to stick to them again. It can remove years of build up on older pipes, making them almost like new again and extending the longevity of the system.
How Do I Know if I Need Hydro Jetting?
Commercial business like restaurants should have routine hydro-jet cleanings to remove grease and food build up from pipes.
Homeowners that are having to frequently unclog their pipes with drain snakes and chemical cleaners should consider hydro jetting. Also, homeowners that notice sand, silt, and scale build up will greatly benefit from a hydro-jet cleaning.
Hydro jetting should only be performed by an experienced plumbing contractor. They are trained on how to use the equipment safely and can inspect the sewer system prior to the cleaning to prevent any damage to the pipes.
