Installation of Over Head Sewer System to Prevent City Sewer Back Ups!

Over head sewer system conversions to prevent flooding. This is a great system if you have ever experienced city sewer back ups in a heavy rain situation. A over head sewer system is exactly that. Your sewer system is over the city sewers head pressure. If you have a over head sewer system your gravity draining fixtures would be higher than the city sewer. A over head sewer system lowest drain (in house) would be higher than street level or a up steam man hole causing overflow at that point before overflow would happen at your lowest fixture. This would mean you are above the mains head pressure. A over head sewer that has fixtures below the upstream man hole need to be connected to a pump with a heavy duty check valve attached. A over head sewer system is the best defense against city sewer back up.

Another method that is common to the Chicago area is a flood control system. A flood control system has a one way flapper valve installed to allow water to flow out and not back in. The system needs to have a overflow point that would be pumped down stream of the flapper valve. With out this overflow point you would not have a sewer that would drain on account of the flapper being held shut by water back up. A flood control system with a flapper valve is a great solution if it is not cost effective to install a over head sewer system. Maintenance of the flapper valve should be done yearly to guaranty valve will swing closed.
