How to Handle a Plumbing Emergency

Emergency PlumbingOwning a home can be a wonderful thing, but there are also responsibilities that come along with it. While you don’t have to be an expert in every area of your home, knowing some basics can definitely help if something is ever to go wrong. One thing that many homeowners have come home to, is a plumbing emergency. Clogged toilets, broken hot water heater in the middle of winter, burst pipes, and water in the basement are just a few issues that a homeowner may face at one point or another.

Step one is not to panic during a plumbing emergency, here are a few tips to get started. Clogged toilets are a common problem, if you find your toilet won’t stop running or is continually clogged, shut the water off from the back of the toilet. This will put a band aid on the problem, giving your plumber time to get to your house and assess the situation. Hot water heater problems are also another major problem, especially for those living in colder climates. If you find you are having issues you should first turn off the gas valve next to the heater, turn the dial to off. You will also want to shut down your water supply to the hot water heater as well. The key here, like shutting the water off behind your toilet, it to stop the problem in it’s tracks, giving the plumber enough time to respond to your call and assess the problem before it gets any worse.

The more you can equip yourself with basic knowledge about your home, the better chance you have of giving your plumber ample time to respond to your emergency and help you. Also doing basic maintenance like flushing your pipes, or checking for cracks can help you avoid unnecessary emergencies that don’t need to happen.
