When you and your plumber have decided that it is time to repipe, there are several options you can choose from. Your options will be based on price, preference, and what your plumber normally works with. Some plumbers prefer to use older, more proven methods and materials, while others will insist upon the latest in plumbing technology. The most common in use today, are copper, PVC, and PEX tubing. Previously, steel, lead and black iron plumbing were common, but are often replaced rather than repaired, as they are all inferior, and in some cases, hazardous.
Copper – Copper pipes last for ages, and if you have exposed piping, they look wonderful. Copper however, can be costly in both installation and in replacement. Copper lines Many people prefer to have metal pipes for one reason or another, but it comes down to preference.
PVC – Hard plastic pipes are inexpensive, easy to work with, and many plumbers prefer them. PVC piping doesn’t have any clear advantages or disadvantages, and is a good solid middle of the road choice. PVC is also the most suitable choice for several functions in your plumbing system.
PEX Tubing – The new kid in plumbing, PEX is a strong flexible tube rather than traditional pipe. It is nearly impervious to environmental effects such as extreme temperatures. For supply lines, it is superior for it’s strength and flexibility, allowing it to be run without joints and bends. It is not ideal, however for drainage lines that are not under pressure.
More than likely, your repiping will involve two or more kinds of pipes being fitted, depending on your needs, preferences and ease of installation. As noted about PEX, the system needs rigid drainage pipes to maintain sanitary conditions. Consulting with your plumber will let you know what the best choice is for your repiping job. Talk with them about all the options they offer, and be sure to ask why they have preferences over other materials.
